Let’s Talk SEO and Web Design!

What Does ‘SEO Friendly’ Website Design Mean?

I often have clients who will book in with me after a ranking drop, and be confused about why this has happened when they invested in an ‘SEO friendly’ website. Whilst it is really awesome that so many talented designers create beautiful websites with SEO in mind, an SEO friendly design is not the same as an SEO migration. Let’s look at the differences between these two things!

‘SEO Friendly’ Web Design

SEO friendly web design is a design that is created with Google in mind. Whilst the details can vary, this typically means that your website will be easy to crawl, and your pages designed in alignment with Google best practice guidelines around things like image and heading best practice. I would also expect that the design would be in compliance with the latest Google best practices around accessibility, and optimised to perform well as part of the new Core Web Vitals guidelines. None of this however, takes into consideration your current rankings.

SEO Migration

An SEO Migration is where your current rankings are analysed, your existing website along with all SEO settings are extracted and the data collated, and these settings are then moved over to your new website design. Because of the nature of this and how it can impact planned changes to the website, it is important that this is started before the web design phase so as to avoid additional work for your designer. This process requires a suite of specialist software that your web designer is unlikely to be using.

As designers are experts in web design and not SEO, SEO migrations are carried out by SEO consultants like myself who have access to the specialist analytical software and the skills and knowledge to be able to provide advice in relation to any changes with a design or website platform change.

Hang on, I’ve not even introduced myself yet! Let’s fix that!

WELL HELLO THERE!

I’m Karen, and I’m an SEO consultant and coach with many years of experience working with photographers to help them be found on Google by their ideal client.

I’m also a part-qualified teacher and I spend my weekdays coaching photographers on how they can use Google as a matchmaker so their ideal client can accidentally-on-purpose stumble over their website and (fingers crossed!) fall in love with their work.

I provide a range of SEO services including technical SEO, SEO strategy and content optimisation to photographers around the world, as well as technical SEO support for agencies who occasionally need an SEO specialist on their team.

Now you know what an SEO migration is, let’s talk about what’s included!

SEO Migration

An SEO Migration is split into three distinct phases. Phase one is about analyzing the current performance and website SEO settings. Phase two is applying the necessary settings to the new design. Phase three is a monitoring and assessment of post-launch performance.

1. Website Crawl

We’ll crawl your existing website to have a record of core information like URL structure, page titles and header information.

2. Site architecture

The internal link structure of the website along with page hierarchy will be analysed to ensure this is maintained in the new website.

3. Google Data

Google Analytics and Google Search Console data will be analysed to ensure the new web design takes into account current performance.

5. Moving SEO Settings

Your SEO settings will be moved to your new web design to ensure they remain the same.

6. Homepage Optimization

We’ll use state-of-the-art SEO software to optimise your new design homepage.

Post-Launch Health Check

Your site will be crawled to check for issues, and we’ll submit your new sitemap and check Google is indexing the new design.
